The building was constructed in 1972 on the outskirts of a small town near Lake Constance. The clients were convinced to retain the existing structure, which continuously impressed us throughout the process. The renovation seeks to highlight the existing qualities with targeted interventions. More by removing elements than adding new ones, connections were revealed.

The dilapidated pool was dismantled but remains visible in its original contour, now integrated into the living space by an extended roof. Even more – it becomes a defining feature of the house. With the preserved pool structure, it is very concrete in its architecture, yet offers potential for a variety of uses. The outer wall of the pool turned out to be the only reinforced concrete wall in the house. This allowed for a round opening to be cut into it, accentuating the uniqueness of the space, inspired by the aquatic theme.

Another crucial measure was the removal of the suspended ceiling. This makes the existing heights and roof geometry tangible within the interior. Towards the ridge, the rooms open up to a height of nearly 4.50 meters. The removal of the old doors and lintels underscores the scale of the existing structure. Room transitions are created almost exclusively through the existing walls; only the bedrooms and some bathrooms are separated by doors. The immediate meeting of the roof planes creates a fascinating play of light and shadow.

The aim was to create robust spaces and reveal the beauty of the existing structure. Whenever in doubt, we drove to the house with plans and models.

AS FOUND is the tendency to engage with what is there, to recognize the existing, to follow its traces with interest. „It is the astute acknowledgment of reality, a new look at the ordinary, and an openness to the effect that quite prosaic things can revive our imagination.“ – Alison and Peter Smithson
