The new Territorial Centre for Music of Arborea was created through the recovery of a building originally intended for Home for Craftsmen located on the road axis called Corso Italia. The building, which was under protection under D.Lgs. 42/2004, was in a clearly poor state of conservation with collapsed roof portions, cracks in walls, rising moisture, Plaster dislodging and presence of elements inconsistent with the original structure. The project therefore aimed to restore the building to an optimum condition through specific actions aimed not only at the recovery of the building but also at its re-functionalization.
The building underwent several interventions, including keeping the Corso Italia fountain as it was, but reorganizing the interior façade with a sequence of openings. The three large openings that connect the interior with the exterior have been preserved. The roof was reconstructed by repeating the design of the trusses, now made of laminated, surmounted by a layer of roofing and interspersed with a insulation package capable of improving thermal comfort conditions and reducing energy requirements. The plasters and floors have been demolished and redone, replacing the fixtures with more efficient double chamber anodized aluminium frames.
The financial resources covered part of the intervention, namely that relating to the casing. In a second phase, new installations (lighting system according to the principle of demotics and air conditioning system with heat pump) are planned to optimize and reduce energy consumption. From the functional point of view, the system is designed to accommodate a large multi-purpose room, two music rooms and two office spaces.
The construction phase revealed several critical issues related to worker and workplace safety. First, to allow the selective demolition of the softened building parts and the safe removal of waste materials, it was necessary to install a side scaffold anchored to the structural parts of the building. The material storage areas were in areas cleared of rubble and accessible by safe paths. The presence of asbestos on the roof required the intervention of a specialized company for the removal and disposal with consequent suspension of the works and adjustment of the time and costs.
