The National Cheng Kung University Faculty Dormitory was completed in 1982 on the university grounds in Tainan, southern Taiwan. One half of this symmetrical building was originally occupied by Dean Kun-Yen Huang until 2000. Following the dean’s passing in 2012, the university decided to open the building to the public in 2020, with renovations designed by Shen Ting Tseng Architects.
The project involved removing the party wall that previously separated the dean’s residence from the adjacent wing, creating a single, larger building. A continuous pitched roof now spans the first floor, unifying the two halves. The original staircases were reconfigured to intersect, creating a double-height space.
The renovated residence now houses a bookshop and kitchen on the ground floor, while the upper level accommodates an exhibition space, administrative offices, and meeting and dining rooms.·
