Lumen de lumine is the Latin expression used in the Creed to refer to God.
Today, in the third millennium, it is a question of building an altarpiece in a church in the centre of Madrid, built and restored, which lacked a main altarpiece: the Virgen Milagrosa Church in Calle García de Paredes.
And, of course, we decided that the centre of the altarpiece should be the tabernacle, with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament really present there. And how could this tabernacle be other than suspended in the air, in the centre of a cloud of light? Lumen de lumine, light of light.
When I received this commission, a gift from the wonderful Padres Paules at the end of 2023, I had a simple inspiration that led me from the very first moment to the solution we are proposing today.
In the centre of the altarpiece wall, at the exact height of the view, so high that as soon as we enter the nave this LUMEN DE LUMINE can attract us with such force that, from the first moment, it leads us to prayer, to dialogue with Jesus who is present there, surrounded by a marvellous light.
We opened a square opening in the centre, high up in the brick wall of the apse. This way we get as much natural light as possible. To collect this natural light, we built a cube of translucent white glass measuring 1.20 x 1.20 x 1.20 m, a large part of which is exposed to the outside, receiving natural light. To enhance it, when necessary, we used LED technology which, after numerous tests with models, has led us to some truly marvellous results. The levelling has been done with laser beams, and the union of the translucent glasses that make up the cube, with ultraviolet rays.
And in the centre of this cubic cloud of light, suspended in the air, the golden tabernacle which, for the first time in the history of the Liturgy of the Catholic Church, is in this position, suspended in the air, levitating. So logical that it seems incredible that it has not been done until now.
And nothing else. The arrangement of the floor to facilitate access to this high tabernacle, without losing the simplicity of the circumvallation through the apse, is an easy solution. We have built six steps to reach the top, the light.

LUMEN DE LUMINE Así, Lumen de lumine, es la expresión en latín empleada en el Credo para referirse a Dios. Se trata de levantar hoy, en el tercer milenio, un retablo en una iglesia en el centro de Madrid, construida y restaurada, que carecía de retablo principal: la iglesia basílica de la Virgen Milagrosa en la calle García de Paredes. Y, ¡cómo no!, decidimos que el centro del retablo sea el Sagrario, con Jesús Sacramentado ahí realmente presente. Y, ¿cómo podría estar ese sagrario sino suspendido en el aire, en el centro de una nube de luz? Lumen de lumine, luz de luz. Cuando recibí este encargo, un regalo por parte de los estupendos Padres Paúles a finales de 2023, tuve una sencilla inspiración que me llevó desde el primer momento a la solución que hoy proponemos. En el centro del paramento destinado al retablo, a la altura exacta de la vista, tan alta como para que desde nada más entrar en la nave ese LUMEN DE LUMINE sea capaz de atraernos con tal fuerza que, desde el primer momento, nos lleve a la oración, al diálogo con Jesús Sacramentado que está allí presente, circundado de una luz maravillosa. Abrimos un hueco cuadrado en el centro, en alto, en el muro de ladrillo del ábside. De esta manera se consigue la mayor cantidad de luz natural posible. Para recoger esa luz natural, construimos un cubo de vidrio blanco translúcido de 1,20 x 1,20 x 1,20 m, gran parte del cual queda al exterior, recibiendo la luz natural. Para potenciarla, cuando fuere necesario, usamos la tecnología de los leds que, tras numerosas pruebas con maquetas, nos han llevado a unos resultados verdaderamente maravillosos. La nivelación se ha hecho con rayos laser, y la unión de los vidrios traslúcidos que conforman el cubo, con rayos ultravioletas. Y en el centro de esa nube cúbica de luz, suspendido en el aire, el sagrario dorado que, por primera vez en la historia de la Liturgia de la Iglesia Católica, queda en esa posición, suspendido en el aire, levitando. Tan lógico que parece mentira que no se haya hecho hasta ahora. Y nada más. El acuerdo del suelo para facilitar el acceso a ese Sagrario en alto, sin perder la sencillez de la circunvalación por el ábside, es de fácil solución. Hemos construido seis escalones para llegar a lo alto, a la luz. Creemos que nuestro entusiasmo está acorde con la belleza de la solución propuesta, encontrada y construida. La belleza puesta a los pies del Señor.
