The transformation of Aarhus’ former industrial harbor into a vibrant waterfront neighborhood has been recognized and celebrated by its residents ever since the opening of its first component, the Aarhus Harbor Bath, in 2018 – inviting citizens and visitors to spend the day, take a dip, or simply get to know the burgeoning neighborhood.
In collaboration with SLETH A/S , Kilden, Mortensen & Hindby, Aarhus Kommune and Gehl – Making Cities for People, BIG approached the masterplanning of the decommissioned pier by prioritizing spaces for public programs and using the remaining areas for commercial and residential developments. The latest addition to the masterplan is the Urban Life houses – a row of 13 individual units, each with a distinct architectural character and materials including cork, charred, reused wood and thatched straw.
Sitting at the edge of the waterfront, the units host a mix of cafés, restaurants, and bars, complementing the adjacent Harbor Bath and seamlessly connecting the city to the sea.
