Emmanuel College’s most significant development for over 100 years will enable its community to mix, work and gather in new ways.

Our interventions at Emmanuel College deliver transformational new accommodation while responding to the unique spatial qualities of its historic Cambridge campus. The ambitious scheme focuses on the creation of new communal and residential spaces that will support the 400-year old College’s social and intellectual life long into the future.

Emmanuel College occupies extensive grounds in the Cambridge Central Conservation Area, with a range of buildings dating back to Medieval times. The campus is characterised by a series of interlinked formal and informal courts and landscape spaces, providing a sheltered environment in the urban heart of the city.

Stanton Williams’ scheme combines new build and refurbishment and is based around landscaped courts. New College Court will deliver 50 additional student rooms enabling the College to meet its ambition to accommodate all undergraduate students onsite. New, state-of-the-art teaching facilities are created at Furness Lodge.

The project also provides additional social facilities that support the communal life of the College and the evolving character of the collegiate community. These include a new social hub at South Court offering an informal social and learning environment. A service wing is repurposed and adapted as a double height college bar and an events space.

Further new communal spaces are created within the existing network of collegiate courts, located where the courts meet the surrounding urban and residential fabric. These provide a series of more intimate spaces that mediate in scale between the traditional college court and the scale of the residential courtyards and gardens.
