Herzog & de Meuron

The cornerstone for the new Museum der Moderne – berlin modern was laid today. The area is the last site on Berlin’s Kulturforum, located between Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie and Hans Scharoun’s Philharmonie. The new museum and the neighbouring Neue Nationalgalerie will house the art collections of the Nationalgalerie collection of the 20th century. For decades, the Neue Nationalgalerie has only been able to present parts of its extensive holdings. In addition, works from the Ulla & Heiner Pietzsch Collection, the Marx Collection, the Marzona Collection, as well as the Art Library and the Museum of Prints and Drawings will be on display in the new building. According to current planning, construction will be completed in 2027.

“The vision for a “House for All” in Berlin is now becoming a reality with today’s laying of the cornerstone. The independent and open building form puts emphasis on the people, their encounters with each other and with the art on display, and connects the existing buildings on the Kulturforum to form an urban ensemble. The design is an ecological contribution to the city’s urban development thanks to an extensive green concept, adapted building technology with different climate zones and a large photovoltaic roof.
