Junia Church . Copenhagen

Laurids Bager . Philip Lütken

Junia, a temporary, moveable and tiny church in Nordhavnen, Copenhagen. We imagined the church as a monumental figure amongst the sheds of the harbour. A figure, informed by the wooden structures of the area and the rich brick churches of the city. We took great joy in recognizing the contradiction between these two typologies.

Outside, the church reaches towards the sky with white roofs, gables and towers. Depending on distance and context, it could be huge or small. The transition to the interior is celebrated with thick walls and a hidden vaulted space in the centre. While appearing massive and heavy, everything is made from painted wooden boards. A series of 19 doors allows the space to be opened towards the world or closed for reflection and spirituality.
