We approached the task of renovating the facade of the Faculty of Architecture in Brussels (Building L) by removing almost nothing, just two cuts to form entrances but otherwise the Factory building with large single-glazed windows and brick facades is left intact.
A new timber and glass facade is hung in front providing a ’space-between’ for movement and use. This buffer zone allowed us to organise the interiors to form large landscapes of work space without the constraints that fire zoning and escape would impose upon it. The new facade frames the noble proportions of the host and provides a perforate face to the university campus and new public space in front.
