Urban Living Field. An Open Infrastructure . Brussels

Nicolas Sottili

The Tour & Taxis area was for years the main industrial centre of Brussels. Over time, it has been involved in a process of de-industrialisation that has left it in a state of uncertainty. The redevelopment of the area is part of a larger masterplan that envisages a park along the canal.

The project is based on the idea of fusing together urban and natural landscapes. A series of walls define the area, measuring it and giving it a spatial rhythm. Ruins of the modern era can be traversed, experienced as a space in itself or transformed into the backdrop for outdoor public events. They can also be inhabited by adding elements to create closed and flexible spaces halfway between living and working.

The project aims to act as a social catalyst activating realities capable of giving a new identity to the entire neighbourhood and contributing to the gradual reconstruction of local culture.
