Al-Jawad Pike were commissioned to remodel and reconstruct an existing barn in Oxfordshire to improve the layout and quality of spaces, for use as a family home. The layout is split into three wings with the larger two storey central block accommodating the main living spaces. An open staircase located within a large top-lit double height space connects the living space and first floor bedrooms. The kitchen wing features a large island and looks out to a south-facing walled garden. A new guest wing accommodates a master suite and additional bedroom overlooking the entrance courtyard and expansive meadow.

Internally, additions have been conceived as new material ‘insertions’ within the barn vernacular. A new polished concrete floor is used throughout the ground floor spaces, with white-washed brickwork, a new mild steel staircase and various douglas fir joinery elements. The external brickwork is ‘bag-finished’ in a lime slurry to unify the various types of brickwork that have been used over time, creating a singular volumetric expression.
