Glencairn is a mid 19th century estate, located in the inner city suburb of Coburg. As one of the oldest surviving buildings in the area, the original bluestone residence of simple classic revival detail was sequentially embellished with a monumental porch, timber verandah, ornamental turret, roof top widows walk and series of periphery outbuildings to create a picturesque and eclectic composition of noted individual heritage significance.

The addition of a Living pavilion to the north of the site follows the rhythm of the three successive bluestone blocks which comprise the original residence. A northern, concrete block courtyard is further established through this arrangement. Connected by a steel portal formed within an existing opening, Kitchen and Bathroom blocks sit within the original bluestone walls, while the fully restored residence and reinstated widows walk celebrate the enduring heritage of the estate.

Following a long tradition of architecture conceived as an extension of its surroundings, the heritage listed trees and gardens provided opportunities for siting, ensuring that every space is connected to landscape. The circular, planted mound of the courtyard echoes the formal geometry of the front garden, interweaving building, landscape and place.
