After many years of large interventions, the time for ‘minor-surgery’ constructions has arrived. If the new demands of society do not require major interventions anymore, architects should not fill our cities with lavish buildings. This new “small” architecture works like a precise scalpel: repairing the damage and regenerating the fabrics of our cities and homes in an adequate and meticulous way. The renovation for Rico&Ana’s house was an example of this. This unfinished “lavish building” – or finished in parts – requires an effective architectural exercise to acommodate the building to the needs of our clients.
This project starts from Brazil, as a curious commission. Our clients wanted to reform a house for their stays in Spain.
In addition, the tight economic budget forces us to multiply, even more, our skills and to optimize the resources.
The first Skype meetings were a trustworthy exercise. The trust, we promise, was returned.
So, this small-scale operation acts mainly on the existing, understanding that not everything must be destroyed and, subsequently, regretted. We worked on the real, recognizing in the house certain values that could be a pleasant starting point.
One of these key points is the central space, around the fireplace. A premise was the construction of a space around the fire. Thus, we proposed them to turn their house into a dance around the fire. A circumpolar tour, a dance within the house.
As if it were not enough, in the middle of the construction work, the clients told us that they had planned to move to Spain definitely (with a third baby on the way!).
We did not want to be the protagonists of this project, we know that the memory of our work here will be fleeting, but if our intervention serves to make a part of their lives a bit happier, our effort will not be for nothing.

Superada la época de las grandes actuaciones, llega el tiempo de las operaciones a menor escala. Si las demandas de la sociedad no exigen ya grandes intervenciones, no corresponde al arquitecto llenar nuestras ciudades con fastuosas edificaciones. Esta nueva “pequeña” arquitectura actúa como un preciso bisturí, reparando los daños y regenerando los tejidos de nuestras ciudades y viviendas de forma adecuada y meticulosa. La reforma para la casa de Rico y Ana fue un ejemplo de ello. Una "fastuosa edificación" inacabada - o acabada a retazos - que precisa de un efectivo ejercicio de arquitectura para adaptar el escenario a las necesidades de sus usuarios en los tiempos que corren. Además, lo ajustado de los medios técnicos y económicos de los que disponemos obliga, aún más, a multiplicar destrezas y optimizar recursos. El proyecto arranca desde Brasil, como un curioso encargo. Nuestros clientes quieren reformar y acondicionar una vivienda para sus estancias en España. Las primeras reuniones por Skype son todo un ejercicio de confianza. Un trabajo de cirugía y precisión. La confianza, prometemos, fue correspondida. Uno de estos puntos de los que más se discutió es el espacio central, en torno a la chimenea. Una premisa era la construcción de un espacio en torno al fuego. Así, les propusimos convertir su casa en una danza en torno al fuego. Un recorrido circumpolar, una danza en torno al hogar. Esta operación de pequeña escala actúa principalmente sobre lo existente, entendiendo que no todo merece ser destruido y, posteriormente, lamentado. Trabajamos sobre lo real, permitiéndonos reconocer en el lugar ciertos valores que pueden ser un agradable punto de partida. Por si fuera poco, a mitad de obra, los clientes nos comunican que tenían previsto trasladarse a España (y un tercer hijo en camino!), con lo que hubo que acelerar los trabajos de obra. No queremos ser los protagonistas de este proyecto, sabemos que el recuerdo de nuestro paso por aquí será fugaz, pero si nuestra intervención sirve para hacer un poco más llevadera una parte de sus nuevas vidas nuestro esfuerzo no habrá sido en balde.
