Competition for the new Cal Maiol school and cleaning centre in the area of Can Batlló, Barcelona.
Cal Maiol School is located inside the area of Can Batlló. In fact, it incorporates an old building that used to be part of this industrial complex. The set of naves that still remain in this area today offer a distinct environment characterized by the homogeneity of their ceramic constructive material, large windows, patios and pedestrian passages between low-rise buildings. The new school is presented in continuity with the character and the past of Can Batlló, in an attempt to highlight its importance and to relate to its immediate context that is gradually being reactivated with new cultural and educational programs. The school is strengthened by this past that is still alive: naves for teaching with patios, courts and playgrounds recover the memory of this place. They are grouped together and leave spaces for encounter, learning and exchange, to grow by playing and socializing.
The school incorporates the old Nave 19 building – a former electrical transformer station – and grows via three new constructions that seek a dialogue in continuity with the existing building, relating to it by constructive typology, structure, scale and proportions.
