The design of this beach café in the Lake District took its initial inspiration from a cluster of rocks found nearby. These ‘rocks’ interconnect in a non-uniform way to create an organic plan reminiscent of the farm buildings in the area. The axis of each volume is slightly shifted in order to frame specific views of the mountain, moorland, beach and sea.

The vernacular styles of corrugated metal barns and slate gable roofs combine, volume by volume, to create a complex interior with an interweaving collage of timber and metal structures. The corrugated volumes provide darker cave-like spaces, whilst the slate roofed volumes are lighter and fully glazed.
