Herzog & de Meuron . Vogt landscape architects
Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with Vogt landscape architects have been announced as winners of the City of Hamburg’s competition for the urban development of the Grasbrook district. The former port area on the southern bank of the Norderelbe will turn into a new, central neighbourhood, with 3,000 apartments, 16,000 workplaces, and spacious recreational areas.
The centerpiece of our proposal is a big park surrounded by residential areas. Existing heritage protected buildings alongside the docks will be preserved and will form a starting point for the new development. The sweeping canopy of the Übersee-Zentrum (overseas center) will become a central open space in the new quarter. Commercial high-rise buildings along the traffic lane in the East and the port area in the South will protect the neighbourhood from noise pollution. The district center at the Moldauhafen with shops, cafés and a weekly market is directly connected to the neighbouring Veddel district via a wide pedestrian bridge. The new neighbourhood combines everything that defines quality of life in Hamburg: living and working in the middle of the city and along the water at the same time.
A detailed functional and development plan will now be drawn up, the plots of land allocated and the architectural planning of the individual buildings started. Construction could start as early as 2023.
