The project ‘Gheuze’ (a reference to it’s streetname “Gheudestraat” and the adjacent Cantillon brewery where the typically Brussels Geuze beer is made), is situated in Cureghem, an old industrial neighbourhood in the heart of Brussels : this is where we transform an empty industrial building into a warm home. A young couple resolutely chooses to live in the city. A story of densification (living above a warehouse and an industrial kitchen) and repurposing, a story of confidence in the future.
As it should be with a ‘secret annex’, there is a long way to go from street to the entrance of the apartment on the first floor. Gradually the city noise fades away.
challenge 1: light, air and space: zoning without the classic hallway, extra lightwells where needed (bathroom and entrance)
challenge 2 : repurposing : give the place a sense of comfort and homeliness.
challenge 3 : limited budget > focus ! making a ‘home’ does not necessarily have to be expensive.
All technical installations, for example, remain visible.
Finding a balance between adding and deleting.

Atelier wordt loft. Evenwicht tussen schrappen en toevoegen, tussen uit- en aankleden.
‘Gheuze’ (een verbastering van Gheudestraat en het naastgelegen museum van de Geuze), Kuregem, hartje Anderlecht : precies hiér vormen we een leegstand industriëel pand om tot een warm thuis. Een jong koppel kiest resoluut voor de stad.
Een verhaal van verdichting (wonen boven een atelier en grootkeuken) en herbestemming, een verhaal van vertrouwen in de toekomst.
Zoals het hoort bij een ‘achterhuis’, heb je een lange weg te gaan van straat tot voordeur op plus één, gaandeweg verstomt het stadslawaai.
uitdaging 1 : licht, lucht en ruimte : zonering zonder de klassieke ‘gang’, extra ‘licht-happers’ waar nodig (bad en entrée)
uitdaging 2 : herbestemming : een plek geborgenheid en huiselijkheid meegeven.
uitdaging 3 : beperkt budget > focus ! een ‘thuis maken’ hoeft niet per sé duur te zijn. Technieken bijvoorbeeld blijven in opbouw.
