Höganäs is a charming town in southern Sweden facing the sea. The proposal shows how the existing library could be transformed into a new cultural center, simply by developing the building. The library currently rents space in a housing block, hence one of the great challenges of the proposal was to find a sustainable owner structure and a clearly public character. Architecturally, the approach consists of two parts: a radical transformation of the existing structure, as well as placing a large new volume on top. The proposal is handling the existing 60’s housing block in a resolute manner: opening up entirely towards the square, recomposing the apertures of its façade to reach a public character, and cutting out large slab openings between floors. The new building on top compliments the scheme with all that the existing building can never provide – generous and varied floor heights, views, transparency, brightness, and spaciousness. In Höganäs, the culture is rising to get in touch with the surrounding town, landscape and sea.
