SO–IL reveals their design proposal for Wesleyan University’s Davison Art Center’s new gallery.
In response to an invited design competition, SO–IL proposed a transparent connector between two buildings and a solid gallery for works on paper.
The design addresses the duality of the site, providing strong entrances on the historic, street-facing site as well as on the quad-facing side. By occupying the length of the site, the design treats the procession to the gallery as a sequence in which the visitor is able to slow down through a series of thresholds, including a meditative garden. The spaces are unified by a continuous roof that connects the unique experiences and additionally announces the gallery at its apex.
