Located on the corner of East Smithfield and Thomas More Street, Rotherwick House, built in 1805, is half of a pair of fine and simple classical buildings called the London Dock House. The building plays a valuable role in Tower Hamlet’s rich Dockland tapestry. A fit out in the 1980s resulted in a loss of original character and the unique quality of the original construction.

This project sought to sensitively open up the layout and extend the building to meet the standards of a modern office, whilst celebrating the qualities of the Grade II listed building.

The refurbishment and removed cellular office spaces, re-instating the large ‘hall’ volume which is much closer to the original proportions of the historic building. Historic fabric has been revealed where possible to allow the original character of the space to be celebrated.
