Site
We found the site and program as a good chance to evoke people to think about why we live where we live and how we live there.
In the big scale of the landscape, the city where people live is sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean by the mountains.
We wanted to emphasize this by being a part of the mountain and the protection, not to sit on top of it.
Dwelling
We cut into the rock to create shelter for the dwelling. To feel the properties of the mountain, not only as a volume, the cut follows the angle of the sedimentary layers. This also gives properties that the program can take advantage of. The sleeping area is both protected from the wind and rain, because of this angled cut.
We place minimal horizontal structures into the cut to maximize the closeness to the mountain.
The minimal structures also give a simplicity to the dwelling and makes a contrast and comparison to the way we live in the city.
