The project is situated in Machelen-aan-de-Leie, a small village with four thousand inhabitants. The structure of the village is medieval and is characterized by irregular field boundaries and kinked narrow streets.

The starting point of design was to manipulate basic typologies of the typical Flemish house and shed. The irrigular form of the site finds its translation in the transformed facades and roof. It is more than a formal manipulation, it also has a great spatial impact inside.

The small footprint of the house and the choice of building materials was given by the fact that the owner wanted to built the house own-handed, which he did succesfully. The floor plan shows an open living space situated towards the garden. On streetside the house has two levels with all the functions and rooms.

In its first approach the house doesn’t seem different than the surrounding houses, a second reading is maybe more confusing.
