Spiky . Beijing

Solid Objectives – Idenburg Liu (SO-IL) . china international architectural biennial 2013

Providing shelter is the starting point of architecture, protecting us from the elements. Most often our roofs are angled or fl at, heavy and opaque.
In exceptional cases, we experience a more ephemeral condition, a light and transparent structure, allowing for a totally different relationship with our surroundings. Spiky is a conic transparent canopy, suspended on stainless steel poles. Through its optical performance, it reflects and refracts the world around us, blending sky, nature and ground into a total environment. The system is flexible, and can be composed of anywhere from 9 to 25 modules.
