Born ‘Alexis Leyva Machado on the Isla de Pinos (1970) is a contemporary Cuban artist. Kcho has had art showings around the world. He first attracted international attention by winning the grand prize at South Korea’s Kwangju Biennial in 1995. Kcho was born in Nueva Gerona, Cuba, in 1970. He graduated from the National School of Fine Arts (Havana) in 1990, after which he was awarded the Saiz Brothers Association Prize. In 1996, he began exhibiting his work at the National Centre of Contemporary Art (Montreal, Canada), the Museum of Contemporary Art (LA, USA; 1997) and the Reina Sofia National Museum (Madrid; 2000). In 1992, Kcho was made a member of the Jury of the National Salon of the National Museum Palace of Fine Arts, Havana; in 1994, he received a scholarship by the Ludwig Foundation; and in 1995, he received the UNESCO Prize for Promotion of the Arts, Geneva, Switzerland. Kcho is known for creating works based on the forms of boats, often made from scavenged or improvised materials, and incorporating iconography and items from everyday life in Cuba into his art.
