Bobby Dowler works collecting and re-utilizing found paintings-on-canvas and wood-stretcher-frames that have been pre-used in the past by others. Once he separates canvas and stretcher he adds them to his collection, built up over the years, and let these elements’ history deeply influence his sense of what to do and how to proceed. However, in general he will physically manipulate the materials with hands and tools, like staples and glue, until, unpredictably, reaching a final result he is satisfied with. If, in previous years, Dowler’s practice was rough, materic and chaotic, his most recent practice has been driven by newfound clarity and scale, proposing large scale works of monochromatic basic color fields systems, assembled unevenly by strategies of installation, interlocking and superposition.
