This house built under severe conditions on a steep north-down slope. The lower part is an intermediate space, the floating upper part is a one-room living space, with concrete structure as a base for living. As opposed to the normative conditions that placing “man” or “machine” at the core of architecture, we placing a hole that permeate “the nature” at the center of architecture. The existing site, which sits in a small village, held an ageing farmhouse right beside a small factory shed structure. The house was not in good condition, but the factory building, just a metre or so away, and in alignment, was a still-strong steel-framed, high-roofed volume. Initially, the client assumed the factory part would become a studio for teaching fitness in. But after studying the two buildings, the architects convinced the client to reverse the scenario, and convert the larger, newer building into the family residence. Continue reading Noriaki Hanaoka
