The existing modernist house of the early sixties is situated in a rural environment characterised by pastures and pine woods. Characteristic of the existing facades are the brutality and the vertical and plane construction alternating glass and masonry (brick work). The glass addition at the east-side of the house was implanted between the pine trees. The new facades of clear and frosted layered glass are a modern translation of the vertical facade construction of the existing house. The skin of layered glass without (any)mouldings, partially transparent, partially opaque, replaces the traditional brick and fulfils a triple function of raincoat, security and atmosphere. ‘Hooghuys’ is a former warehouse located along the stream Melaan in the city centre of Mechelen. The Unesco listed monument is one of the oldest buildings of Mechelen. Archaeological examination proves that the foundations and the basis of the building dated from the 13th and 14 th century. Very characteristic are the steep pitched roof and the medieval timber roof construction. During the long history of the Hooghuys, the building was renovated and extented different times according to the current style . The last renovation dated from the late 19the century. Stedelijk Museum Hof van Busleyden Renewal . Mechelen

‘Hof van Busleyden’ consists of a complex of buildings, built out of brick and sandstone in replicating late-gothic style, around three external spaces: the small northern court-yard with pine trees, the central rectangular one, paved with cobblestones, and the south-oriented town garden. Since 1938 its function is the one of city museum. The building was protected as a monument. Continue reading dmvA
