The Guggenheim Helsinki has a vertical dimension. It rises above the roofline of the adjacent city but falls below the height of the historic landmarks. The center of the Guggenheim Helsinki is open and public. The main hall is a vertical alternation of closed and open balconies connected by a series of escalators and recalls the faded memories of the “Piranesian” galleries. The Serpentine design for the 15th annual Pavilion has been revealed, showing an amorphous, double-skinned, polygonal structure consisting of panels of a translucent, multi-coloured fabric membane (ETFE) woven though and wrapped in webbing. Visitors will be able to enter and exit the Pavilion at a number of different points, passing through a “secret corridor” between the outer and inner layer of the structure and into the Pavilion’s brilliant, stained glass-effect interior. The Barceló Market area in Madrid includes public spaces, temporary buildings, and installations belonging to a same complex. Its multiple denomination -market/sports center/library- speaks of collective engagement and reveals the social condition of the program: a compact market topped by a sports pavilion framing the city, in front of which a cantilevered library rises above a schoolyard.
