Located on the edge of the city, A House for Artists is part of Brussels’s Artist Studio Initiative and seeks to provide both long and short-term affordable housing options to young artists, whilst acting as a natural filter to the neighbourhood.
The emphasis of the house is a large, covered roof that creates informal and sheltered spaces, following the modular logic of a façade subdivision that interacts with the surrounding landscape. The building seeks to reflect two intersecting typologies; the domestic and spatial needs of artists and their growing families, whilst being sufficiently open enough to allow new uses to develop. In this way, the building not only seeks to allow artists and the community to connect in new ways, but to also be an evolving daily scene of life and work.
