Musik für ein Haus. A Community Centre for Cureghem . Brussels
David Welding
Since music is the result of a productive exchange of cultures, of which Cureghem is itself a manifestation of, a new music centre in Cureghem will provide rehearsal rooms required by the municipality and replace the school’s old disused auditorium.
Placed at the end of a uniform row of humble apartment blocks, the project provides closure to an incomplete urban block. The autonomous volumetric figure recognises the impossibility of a seamless integration with the city fabric. The core of the building is a massive volume, made of concrete and lined with acoustic wooden panels. The perimeter, made of wood and fabric, adapts to external conditions, and moves according to use, becoming a sign of public accessibility.
