Buffalo AKG Art Museum by OMA / Shohei Shigematsu to open on May 25, 2023.
The new and expanded campus to feature new work of signature architecture, the Jeffrey E. Gundlach Building, and extensive renovation to existing buildings. $20 million commitment from New York State and Governor Kathy Hochul fulfills expansion budget, completes $230 million capital campaign, largest campaign for a cultural institution in the history of Western New York.
The Buffalo AKG Art Museum (formerly the Albright-Knox Art Gallery) announced it will open on May 25, 2023, welcoming its local community and visitors from around the world to its renewed and vastly expanded campus designed by OMA/Shohei Shigematsu.
The announcement also marked the official completion of the museum’s $230 million capital campaign, the largest campaign for a cultural institution in the history of Western New York, due to an additional $20 million commitment of support from New York State. In total, approximately $195 million was raised for the construction project, with an additional $35 million raised in operating endowment funds.
The project is designed by OMA New York, led by Partner Shohei Shigematsu and Project Architects Lawrence Siu and Paxton Sheldahl, with Cooper Robertson (Executive Architect).
