A nineteenth century former textile factory in the district of Sants-Montjuic in Barcelona, Can Batlló is a wonderful example of elegant industrial engineering.

The proposed project returns the existing ground floor structure to its original grandeur and applies the ‘box within a box’ approach, using the existing envelope as a protective shelter to provide a comfortable, naturally ventilated and shaded environment which encloses the climate-controlled archive in the centre of the building.

The ambition is to embrace the industrial identity of the former factory, transforming it with a light touch and a deliberate economy of means, so as to minimise waste, pollution and reduce demolition and construction costs.
