Competition to renew the Castello di Locarno in Ticino, Switzerland. Christ & Gantenbein together with Baukuh won the second prize.
The proposal includes a series of delicate and coordinated interventions that modify several points of the complex producing a unified strategy and a coherent constellation of much-needed and valuable updates. The design removes barriers separating the two-building complex consisting of the Castello and the Casorella, from the urban context near the Piazza Grande and the city of Locarno. By optimizing access points through a continuous ramp connecting various levels and by transforming its garden into a public park and vineyard, the complex is opened up and reconnected to the public and the city as a whole.
