The project seeks to transform a 70m2 duplex located in the neighbourhood of Arturo Soria, Madrid.
In origin the house was organized on two levels: a very compartmentalized ground floor which held the day areas: hall, kitchen, living room, pantry and storage spaces, and a private upper floor, with two bedrooms and a bathroom.
The challenge of this intervention was to optimize the use of the space by connecting the living room and the kitchen while adding a toilet on the ground floor.
To achieve this, we removed the partitions and pack the technical elements, toilet and storage spaces to articulate the resulting continuous space through a central birch element. This exempt piece, that holds bookshelves to the living room and appliances to the kitchen, becomes the lead of the intervention.
In addition, two other strategies are implemented to enhance the continuity of the domestic space:
We hide in the central piece of furniture two sliding doors that allow us to divide the living room and the kitchen. These glass and birch panels maintain a transparent division in the main space of the house, without losing its continuity.
Furthermore, we treat the materiality of the floor differently by linking the living room and the kitchen through a continuous bamboo flooring and using porcelain mate tiles on stairs, bathrooms, laundry and pantry to accentuate the transition between the different areas.
Thus, we unify and connect the day area of the house, accentuating its fluidity by articulating the space through a single element: the central birch piece of furniture.

El proyecto comprende la transformación de un dúplex de 70 m2 situado en el barrio de Arturo Soria, en la ciudad de Madrid. La vivienda se organizaba en dos niveles: una planta baja compartimentada donde se encuentran los espacios de día: recibidor, cocina, salón, despensa y almacenamiento, y una planta superior privada con dos dormitorios y un baño. El desafío de esta reforma ha consistido en optimizar el uso del espacio unificando estar y cocina al mismo tiempo que incorporamos un aseo en planta baja. Para conseguirlo, eliminamos las particiones y empaquetamos los elementos técnicos, aseo y espacios de almacenamiento en bandas funcionales y articulamos el espacio diáfano resultante mediante un mueble central de abedul. Esta pieza exenta, que agrupa la librería en el estar y los electrodomésticos en la cocina, pasa a convertirse en la protagonista de la intervención. Para complementar esta distribución superponemos otras dos estrategias que potencian la continuidad del espacio domestico: Por un lado, ocultamos en el mueble central dos paneles correderos de vidrio y abedul que independizan el estar de la cocina, permitiendo una división transparente con el espacio principal de la vivienda sin perder continuidad. Por otro lado, tratamos de manera diferenciada los pavimentos vinculando estar y cocina a través de un suelo continuo de tarima de bambú y utilizando baldosa porcelánica en escalera, baños, lavadero y despensa para acentuar la transición hacia el resto de espacios. Así, unificamos las estancias de día de la casa acentuando su fluidez y articulamos el espacio principal con un único elemento: el mueble central de abedul.
