Hugo and Luiz’s penthouse apartment on Calle Magdalena in the Lavapiés district of Madrid lacked natural light and was constrained by a construction system of brickwork walls and a wooden structure. This system, so traditional in this neighbourhood, nevertheless made the space a mass of walls and narrow, dark rooms. Reinventing the traditional structure of this type of housing, without hiding it, without condemning it and making it the fundamental concept to be maintained in the project led us to bring out the imposing wooden truss that also marks the area of the upper floor.
The distribution becomes more contemporary, leading the kitchen to merge with the main space of the living room – dining room, and a staircase of locksmithing crosses the two floors generating a visual landmark of great plasticity. The zenithal light, achieved by perforating the sloping roof, accompanies the temporality of the living room, which oriented north-south, now receives light throughout the day, especially marking the arrival to the flat and the heart of the house, that multipurpose place that is a dining room, work area, and meeting place.
The materials used are more than tight, to focus the strength in the new kitchen, a cheerful pink that contrasts with the solutions, almost industrial, continuous floor and pine panels. The bathroom, narrow and very tight in horizontal, expands in its vertical dimension, creating a daily experience in which the shower receives natural light creating an airy space upwards. The distribution of the open and diaphanous ground floor, is articulated in its variable occupation ( arrival of guests, more or less private activities) by means of a simple curtain of great height and curved trajectory that divides the space when it is necessary, without generating edges.

El ático de Hugo y Luiz, en la calle Magdalena del barrio de Lavapiés en Madrid, carecía de luz natural y se encontraba constreñido por un sistema constructivo de muros entramados de ladrillo y pies derechos. Este sistema, tan tradicional en este barrio, hacía no obstante del espacio un amasijo de muros con estancias estrechas y oscuras. Reinventar la tradicional estructura de este tipo de viviendas, sin esconderla, sin condenarla y haciendo de ella el concepto fundamental a mantener en el proyecto nos llevó a vaciar el muro entramado y reforzarlo prescindiendo del pie derecho central. Así el muro entramado se hibrida y reconvierte en cercha para salvar la luz. Delimitando el ámbito del piso superior, se transparenta y fomenta la relación entre los dos niveles. Ahora los cruces de miradas entre los niveles son posibles, enriqueciéndose la capacidad de relación y matices de uso entre el piso superior e inferior. Un trabajo de carpintería básica acompaña la irregular estructura de madera. La distribución se hace más fluida y diáfana llevando la cocina a fusionarse con el espacio principal del salón – comedor. Una escalera de cerrajería atraviesa la buhardilla generando un hito visual de gran plasticidad. La luz cenital, conseguida perforando la cubierta inclinada en dos puntos clave, acceso y salón-comedir, acompaña la temporalidad de la vivienda, que orientada norte-sur, recibe ahora luz durante todo el día. Así, se marcan especialmente la llegada al apartamento, convirtiendo el hall en un distribuidor de luz, y el corazón de la vivienda, ese lugar polivalente que es comedor, zona de trabajo, y de reunión. Los materiales utilizados se ciñen a un presupuesto más que ajustado. Los materiales sin tratar exhiben su simplicidad creando un ambiente industrial pero sorprendentemente minimalista. Se enfoca la fuerza en la nueva cocina, de un alegre rosa palo que contrasta con las soluciones, casi industriales, del suelo continuo y el panelado de pino. El baño, estrecho y ajustado en horizontal, se dilata en su dimensión vertical, creando una experiencia diaria en la que la ducha recibe luz natural y creando un espacio aireado hacia arriba. La distribución de la nueva planta baja, abierta y diáfana, se articula en su ocupación variable (llegada de invitados, actividades más o menos privadas) mediante una cortina de gran altura y trayectoria curva que divide el espacio cuando es necesario, sin generar aristas.
