This project is located in Caulfield North, a leafy suburb South-East of Melbourne in Victoria.
The site contains a large double storey Californian Bungalow style home, built circa 1940.

The project brief was for a functional family home, with living spaces suitable for daily life, which can also grow to accommodate 60+ guests on a regular basis.
The unique, asymmetrical design of the original home, and the interesting material palette of Rendered masonry and timber shingles, heavily influenced the design of the new addition.

At ground level, the Existing dwelling is surrounded by thick, rendered, double brick walls, which create a strong sense of enclosure. The full height glazed walls in the new addition strongly contrast the original home, creating a strong open connection to the garden which surround the new living room. The upper storey addition was conceived as a tree house, slightly detached from the main dwelling, floating above the living room below. The materiality and asymmetrical form of the addition reference the unique character of the existing home, creating a new, contemporary neighbour for the charming old home.
