Villa Der Bau among the 2017 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award nominated works.
_
Der Bau is the project for a villa on the large, secluded site ‘La Garenne’ in the periphery of Brussels. It replaces a mansion from the 1900’s, taking roughly its volume, but undoing the former object from its weight. As a ghost volume it takes its place but offers only a set of relations, with the landscape, with the topography, and internal relations. Different public and private connections with the surrounding landscape are mediated through the set of walls and overhanging floors. Der Bau is an open ordering device, it is an architectural type, partly villa, palazzo, gestalt, partly shelve, set of tables, set of datums, a stack and sequence of reference points.
