Jean-Pascal Flavien has constructed a life-sized house within the exhibition space. Set in the midst of a sandy ground with a number of rocks, the environment evokes a desert. Made of two near identical structures, posed at an angle and apparently held by a central hinge, the house, entitled ballardian four, addresses a notion of doubling, coupling, and splitting—processes that continue throughout the exhibition. The Viewer is a project on which Flavien has been working on for the last two years. There are different steps. The project was first developed in a series of drawings in which the Viewer was set in tropical or antediluvian landscapes and desert climates, and at times placed beside dinosaurs. Flavien forges a peculiar and nonspeculative Science Fiction in those drawings. He is less interested by projections of the future or technology than by anachronisms, chronological deviations that all allow him to activate a different temporality in his work. The house emerges by way of the layout of a series of successive problems. The problems interfere with the possibility of living comfortably, of things running smooth. To experience this house, to live in it for a period of time, is also to confront its problems, to let them influence one’s habits, to let them breed new uses and functions for its elements, like setting up the ladder against the wall in order to enter through its front door, or exiting through the window, or running extension cords in order to provide power to the second floor, or finding ways to arrange an office in its narrow space, or designing specific equipment for the house, … in this way it dissociates things, and associates things.
